Many Mexican cities have a “malecon”. In English it would be called the “boardwalk” (although here it is concrete, not boards), or the “seaside promenade”, or the “paseo”. Regardless of the translation, all malecons are the same – a lovely place to walk along the water in a beautiful Mexican city.
The malecon is the center of social life – morning walkers/joggers, pet walkers, see-and-be-seen folks, evening post-prandial – everyone visits the malecon.
Other than people, there are many public artworks and murals (as well as restaurants, shops, hotels, etc.) along the malecon. Below are just a few.
One of my favorites – Woman in Nautilus. It is beautiful and evocative sculpture on the Malecon in our downtown area.
I don’t know what this is supposed to represent, if anything. It has no information about it, but reminds me of a squid, or a sailboat…
This sculpture represents the passage of time as an hourglass, and marks the location of a time capsule (capsula del tiempo) that is due to be opened in 2069. I hope I’m here for it! 😂
