What are you to do when faced with an 8HOUR layover in Madtid? Check your hand luggage and go into the city! Of course. 😊
It took nearly an hour by metro, including the time.to.get lost while changing stations. But I set my goal for Puerta del Sol and I was off.

From Puerta del Sol it is a short walk to Plaza Mayor, where the Basha and I have history. Involving sangria. Since I was up at 4am and had had virtually nothing to eat, when the kids suggested lunch in Plaza Mayor I couldn’t say no.

Sangria, in accordance with the Basha’s and my history here, pimientos padron, tosta con pimientos y queso de cabra. (In English, sangria, blistered shishito-type papers, and an open-face sandwich with roasted red peppers, onions, goat cheese and a balsamic reduction.) So delicious on a hot summer day in Madrid.
Some AI guided wandering from Plaza Mayor discovered the Plaza de la Villa, mercado de San Miguel, royal palace and Almudena cathedral. Beautiful, overwhelming, and hot. The kids directed me down a small calle and we found el Gato Negro, a yarn store. Impulses buying, egged on by the kids.

And the last stop before going back to the airport… Museo del Jamon! A Spanish institution. It is a coffee shop, it is a sandwich shop, it is a Jamon store, it is DELICIOUS and AMAZING!!

One bocadillo to go and back to the airport. Way better way to spend 5 hours than wasting away in the airport.
See y’all soon!! 💕
